Best Defensive Typings for Pokemon Fusions (All 171 Ranked)
All 171 typings ranked by weaknesses and resistances: the 8 best defensive fusion typings, the strongest fusion for each, and typings to avoid.
Pokemon Fusion Pro Team
The best defensive typings for a Pokemon fusion have only 1 or 2 weaknesses and resist or ignore 9 or more attacking types. Fusions can create 153 dual typings, many of which no official Pokemon has, so you can choose a typing first and then find the 2 Pokemon that make it. We ranked all 171 single and dual typings on the current 18-type chart.
How We Ranked Defensive Typings
Each typing scores 1 point for every resistance or immunity and loses 2 points for every weakness. A 4× weakness counts as 2 weaknesses, because one super-effective hit can knock the fusion out. Weaknesses cost more than resistances earn, so a typing with 1 weakness and few resistances still ranks below one with 2 weaknesses and 10 resistances. Abilities, items and stats are not counted; check those in the Infinite Fusion Calculator.

Best Typings Without Steel
Steel dominates the ranking because it resists 10 types and is immune to Poison. If your team already has a Steel type, these are the best typings without it:
| Typing | Weak to | Resists | Immune to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal/Ghost | Dark | 2 | Normal, Fighting and Ghost |
| Poison/Dark | Ground | 4 | Psychic |
| Ghost/Dark | Fairy | 1 | Normal, Fighting and Psychic |
| Electric/Flying | Ice and Rock | 5 | Ground |
Ghost typings are useful partners for Steel, because their Normal and Fighting immunities cover Steel's Fighting weakness.
Typings to Avoid
The worst defensive typings are weak to 6 or 7 attacking types, including 4× weaknesses. Use them only on fast attackers or with strong support:
| Typing | 4× weak to | 2× weak to |
|---|---|---|
| Grass/Ice | Fire | Fighting, Poison, Flying, Bug, Rock and Steel |
| Ice/Rock | Fighting and Steel | Water, Grass, Ground and Rock |
| Grass/Bug | Fire and Flying | Ice, Poison, Bug and Rock |
| Grass/Psychic | Bug | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Ghost and Dark |
| Ground/Rock | Water and Grass | Ice, Fighting, Ground and Steel |
How to Get the Typing You Want
A fusion's Type 1 comes from the head and its Type 2 from the body. Use these 4 rules to build any typing:
- Pick a head whose first type is the Type 1 you want.
- Pick a body whose second type is the Type 2 you want; a body with 1 type gives that type.
- Avoid repeats: if the body would give the head's type again, it gives its other type instead.
- Normal/Flying Pokemon only pass on Flying, as the head or the body.
Find every partner that makes a typing with the type filter in the Infinite Fusion Dex, check the full chart in the Fusion Type Calculator, and balance a whole team in the Team Builder.
